August Crypto Hacks Result in $163 Million Losses

In August, the crypto industry suffered losses amounting to $163 million due to hacks. Analysts at PeckShield recorded approximately 16 major attacks.

This figure represents a 15% increase compared to July, when losses reached $142 million.
One of the targets for hackers was the Turkish crypto exchange BtcTurk. The platform lost assets worth $54 million. This marks the second major breach of the exchange in the past year. In June 2024, attackers extracted over $50 million from BtcTurk.
The largest single incident of the month involved a private bitcoin investor. The user lost 783 BTC (~$91 million) due to a social engineering attack.
