Lee County Sheriff’s Office warns about bitcoin scam
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public about a scam in which detectives are being impersonated by scammers asking for bitcoin.The scammers are calling people and claiming to be LCSO detectives, even using the names of actual employees to make themselves seem legitimate. The scammers then threaten people with fake arrest warrants and demand payment in bitcoin in order to make the fake charges go away.The LCSO says it will never call you asking for bitcoin, money or gift cards. It will also never threaten to arrest you over the phone. The sheriff’s office warns that if you feel a call is suspicious, hang up.
