Brightseed (San Francisco, CA) has announced the launch of Bio Gut Core, coinciding with the release of data from a new human clinical trial demonstrating the efficacy of the ingredient to strengthen gut barrier function and promote digestive wellness within three weeks of supplementation. The low-dose, easy-to-formulate ingredient is a proprietary blend of two bioactives – N-trans caffeoyltyramine (NCT) and N-trans feruloyltyramine (NFT) – which were discovered by the company’s Forage AI platform. According to the company, the bioactive compounds were found in dozens of ubiquitous, natural plant sources such as garlic and black pepper, and have the ability to activate HNF4⍺, “a transcription factor shown to play a key role in gut barrier function and integrity.”

The findings of the double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial commissioned by Brightseed have not yet been published, but according to the company, results showed that supplementation with the blend of NCT and NFT significantly improved gut barrier function while also reducing abdominal distention and pain after three weeks. The clinical study is under review and anticipated to be published in peer-reviewed journal in late summer.

“Not only are we introducing a novel nature-derived, science-backed ingredient to the $51 billion digestive market, with Bio Gut Core, we’re delivering a next-level solution to elevate overall gut health as well as provide relief for the tens of millions of Americans affected by debilitating digestive health conditions,” said Lee Chae, PhD, co-founder and CEO, Brightseed. “This clinical data further validates the ability of Brightseed’s AI-driven discovery to meaningfully improve human health and quality of life, starting with digestive health. We have big plans from here.”

“This study provides clinical proof that bioactives NCT and NFT significantly improve gut barrier function, delivering a much-needed solution to health companies and consumers alike,” added Swati Kalgaonkar, Brightseed’s head of medical & scientific affairs & clinical research. “Even more exciting than the clinical data from this study are the real-life experiences of study participants who have reported drastic improvements in quality of life and adverse symptom reduction. These kinds of outcomes are the reason Brightseed exists.”

Gut barrier function is a huge opportunity. According to Brightseed, 88% of consumer report seeking products that restore gut barrier function, based a representative survey of 2000 American adults. They go on to explain that gut barrier is crucial for the absorption of nutrients, the regulation of our immune and inflammatory responses, as well as bacterial composition of our guts. Compromised gut barrier function could lead to a condition often referred to as leaky gut.

Previously, Brightseed has introduced an ingredient made from hemp hulls, called Bio Gut Fiber, which is also rich in NCT and NFT.
