A year after South African prosecutors submitted an extradition request for Polokwane-born crypto kingpin Johann Steynberg, there is still no word when the extradition hearing will take place.

Steynberg, the founder and CEO of Mirror Trading International (MTI), was arrested in Brazil in December 2021 on an Interpol warrant a year after fleeing South Africa when his crypto platform collapsed. For the past 16 months he has been in Brazilian prison awaiting an extradition hearing, say SA authorities.

Little known outside of South Africa when he fled the country, Steynberg has since become notorious for receiving the largest-ever fine imposed by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission in the US.
