‘bitcoin Investor In Debt’ Found Dead In River | Kolkata News
KOLKATA: A 49-year-old resident of Buroshibtala near New Alipore, who was associated with a share trading company and reportedly invested in shares and bitcoins, was found dead in the Hooghly near Hirapur Zinjira ghat in Howrah on Monday.
The victim’s family members, who identified him on Tuesday, said he had gone missing on April 16. The primary autopsy report suggested he had died by suicide by drowning in the Hooghly.
On April 7, a person had tried to end his life after losing money in share trading and bitcoin investment.
Cops at the Behala police station, where a missing person’s complaint had been registered, and the Port division police, who had recovered his decomposed body floating in the river, claimed the New Alipore victim was in debt and owed several lakhs. “But it is too early to arrive at any conclusion. An accidental death angle has not been ruled out yet,” said a senior Port division officer.
A close relative claimed the family was in the dark about what transpired. “We are not aware of any major trouble faced by the victim. He was in service but we don’t know anything about his investments, leave alone investments in bitcoin. We also don’t know why he went near the river. We would request all not to jump to a conclusion,” he said.
The police said the victim lived in a flat on Roy Bahadur Roy Road with his wife and son, who studied engineering. His daughter studies in Delhi. The victim’s son had lodged a missing person’s complaint at the Behala PS, saying he had left home around 8.30am on April 16, saying he would be back in an hour, but never returned. “His photo was circulated widely and the search SOP was followed. His last mobile tower location was traced to Dakshineswar. On April 25, the West Port police station learnt about a highly decomposed body floating in the Hooghly near Hirapur Zinjira ghat in Howrah,” police said. The victim was brought to the DMG base at Baje Kadamtala ghat and later declared brought dead around 11.36pm. “We found two debit cards of a private bank in his jeans pocket,” police added.
An unnatural death case has been started at the West Port police station. No complaint was received so far, said police.
