The Great Bitcoin Debate: Sound Money or Tulip Mania

Bitcoin’s adoption as a global currency continues to grow, but does that make it “money”? What is its intrinsic value? Does it truly have potential for mass adoption, or have recent scandals in the crypto industry exposed that the proverbial emperor has no clothes?
George Selgin and Lyn Alden debated this issue on social media and now Kitco News is hosting two economists in a LIVE interactive discussion.
Join Kitco NEWS, LIVE on YouTube, Jan 10, 2023, at 2 pm EST/11 am PT to interact with the two renowned economists with opposing views on the utility of Bitcoin.
Send your questions for Alden and Selgin to askkitconews@kitco.com.
Selgin is the Senior Fellow and Director Emeritus of the Cato Institute’s Center for Monetary and Financial Alternatives. Selgin has publicly stated that he believes Bitcoin doesn’t live up to an “economist’s standard definition” of money.
Challenging this claim is Alden, Founder of Lyn Alden Investment Strategy, who is a proponent of Bitcoin as a form of money and medium of exchange.
The debate will be moderated by David Lin, Anchor and Producer of Kitco NEWS.
Both Selgin and Alden have diverse macroeconomic research interests, so topics will also cover the health of the economy in 2023, the direction of monetary policy, changes in inflation, and the best investment opportunities in the U.S. and abroad.
