Cris­tiano Ronaldo’s first NFT col­lec­tion has been avail­able since Fri­day, Novem­ber 18, but you won’t see us sug­gest­ing that you — or any­one — should sign up for it.

NFTs are a dig­i­tal phe­nom­e­non that have explod­ed over the past two years but there are con­cerns about finan­cial, envi­ron­men­tal sus­tain­abil­i­ty and many oth­er risks involved.

Man­ches­ter Unit­ed have signed up for the same sort of scheme, albeit with a com­peti­tor to Binance (Tezos), which made Ronaldo’s announce­ment a lit­tle bit more inter­est­ing. The one thing, how­ev­er, I can’t get away from is the cringey adver­tise­ment they’ve done to pro­mote it.

The aim is to give fans an intro­duc­tion to Web3 through the world of NFTs.

For Ronaldo’s col­lec­tion, sev­en ani­mat­ed stat­ues with four rar­i­ty lev­els have been released: Super Super Rare (SSR), Super Rare (SR), Rare ®, and Nor­mal (N). Each NFT stat­ue depicts Ronal­do in an icon­ic moment from his life – but not when being inter­viewed by Piers Mor­gan we should add.

More addi­tions will fol­low in ear­ly 2023 but we urge you to stay away from them.
