South Korea may team up with US to investigate crypto crimes

South Korea’s Jus­tice Min­is­ter Han Dong-hoon met with U.S. inves­tiga­tive agen­cies in New York on Tues­day amid the coun­tries’ sep­a­rate inves­ti­ga­tions into Ter­ra and its cofounder Do Kwon.

  • The min­is­ter met with Andrea M. Gris­wold, co-chief of the Secu­ri­ties and Com­modi­ties Task Force, and Scott Hart­man, chief of the Secu­ri­ties and Com­modi­ties Fraud Task Force, at the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the South­ern Dis­trict of New York, accord­ing to South Korea’s Min­istry of Jus­tice.
  • The offi­cials dis­cussed ways to share inves­tiga­tive data on cryp­to crime cas­es between the Seoul South­ern Dis­trict Prosecutor’s Office and the South­ern Dis­trict of New York office, a media release added.
  • Dur­ing his U.S. vis­it, Han also met with offi­cials from the Fed­er­al Bureau of Inves­ti­ga­tion (FBI) where they agreed to ramp up coop­er­a­tion to fight against transna­tion­al crimes such as cyber­crime uti­liz­ing cryp­tocur­ren­cies or ransomware.
  • The Seoul South­ern Dis­trict Prosecutor’s Office is cur­rent­ly inves­ti­gat­ing Ter­raform Labs and CEO Kwon Do-hyung for pos­si­ble charges of fraud, while the U.S. Secu­ri­ties and Exchange Com­mis­sion (SEC) is exam­in­ing the com­pa­ny for pos­si­ble vio­la­tions of fed­er­al secu­ri­ties laws.
