British Icon Mr Bean Is Sadly Bumbling His Way Into NFTs
The bumbling, buffoonish, bamboozled British icon that guffaws about the place and encapsulates the silliness of the British sense of humour has now got a line of NFTs. No, not our Prime Minister, a figure much more beloved than him: Mr Bean.
Mr Bean is a comedic character created by actor Rowan Atkinson. First brought to life in a television series in 1990, there have since been two feature films and an animated series starring the character.
Because nothing is sacred and no childhood memory – no matter how deeply cherished – shall remain unsullied in the pursuit of profit, there are now 3,333 Mr Bean NFTs being launched.
Since God is dead and we have killed him, Yahoo Finance reports Mr Bean NFT “holders will also have access to phygital rewards.” I was also confused by this term, but in this instance, it means you’ll get “redeemables including a signed, unpublished hand-drawn still of Mr Bean from the first animated series.”
We’re yet to see the actual NFTs, but given Mr Bean’s comically awful ability to look after artwork, I wouldn’t get your hopes up.
Mr Bean himself, Atkinson, has voiced his support for the project. “I think that this is a great idea,” he said. “Any initiative which not only draws attention to but actually enables access to the fabulous artwork associated with the Mr Bean Animation series, I welcome with open arms.”
NFT sales are down 92 percent, with many selling for just a fraction of what they were bought for. Scams and hacks are also rife within the community, as $6 million was lost in a phishing incident. As well as that, one NFT project has reportedly run off with over $1 million of investor money. Not so non-fungible after all.
