From Big B to Rajinikanth, 2021 was the year of NFT craze for Indian celebrities

Ever since the non-fun­gi­ble tokens (NFTs) were dropped in the world, it com­plete­ly changed the way we look at assets. The col­lectibles enthu­si­asts were eager and want­ed to make the most of this new technology.

NFTs are a type of dig­i­tal asset which use blockchain to record the own­er­ship of assets. Ever since intro­duc­tion, all forms of arts such as paint­ings, videos, music, designs and more have joined the craze. 

Con­sid­er­ing the hype behind NFTs, many Indi­an celebri­ties, too, have launched their own col­lectibles in the form of dig­i­tal assets.

One of the first Bol­ly­wood actors to hop on the NFT band­wag­on was Amitabh Bachchan. Ear­li­er in Novem­ber, the Bol­ly­wood megas­tar auc­tioned some of his father’s icon­ic poem ‘Mad­husha­la’, which was a record­ing in the actor’s voice, and his own col­lectibles in the form of NFTs.

The Big B launched his col­lectibles on
beyondlife.club. The per­son­al col­lectibles in the form of NFTs also includ­ed his vin­tage movie posters which were auto­graphed by the star.

At the auc­tion, the items were sold for Rs 7.18 crore approximately. 

Salman Khan
Ear­li­er this year in Octo­ber, Salman Khan part­nered with
Bol­ly­Coin, a Bol­ly­wood NFT mar­ket­place, to launch his NFT col­lec­tions. “Aa raha hoon main, NFTs leke. Salman Khan Sta­t­ic NFTs com­ing on bollycoin.com,” Khan had tweet­ed announc­ing his NFT collection.

Accord­ing to reports, close to 1 mil­lion Bol­ly tokens were sold in the first three hours of the launch. 

The same month, the actor launched Indi­a’s first-ever cryp­to token start­ed by micro-con­tent plat­form Chin­gari called GARI. 

Kamal Haasan
In Novem­ber 2021, it was announced that super­star Kamal Haasan was join­ing the NFT space with his own col­lec­tions. The actor, through Lotus Media Enter­tain­ment, has joined hands with a dig­i­tal col­lectibles plat­form called Fan­ti­co to launch his NFT series.

Though not a lot of details are out yet, the series is slat­ed to be launched at kamal.fantico.io, where the actor’s fans will be able to buy mem­o­ra­bil­ia and souvenirs. 

Mean­while, Fan­ti­co will also be launch­ing a game-based meta­verse where­in Haasan will have his own avatar. 

Rajinikanth
Apart from the Big B and Haasan, cin­e­ma leg­end Rajinikanth has also joined the hype behind NFT. In July, the actor part­nered with Sin­ga­pore-based NFT mar­ket­place Diginoor.io to launch his movie col­lectibles based on the 2007 Tamil action thriller ‘Shiv­a­ji the Boss’.

On Diginoor.io users can pur­chase their favourite movie moments using credit/debit card or the cryp­tocur­ren­cy of their own choice.

Who does­n’t remem­ber Chen­nai-based crick­eter Dinesh Karthik’s last-ball six for India against Bangladesh in the 2018 Nida­has Tro­phy! That was a mem­o­rable hit, which the Indi­an crick­eter turned into a form of the coun­try’s first sports NFT titled as ‘Six for the Win’.

The dig­i­tal art fea­tured an ani­mat­ed clip with Karthik’s voice-over which is cur­rent­ly avail­able for bidding. 

Rohit Shar­ma
Indi­a’s white-ball cap­tain Rohit Shar­ma is the lat­est entry into the NFT craze. The crick­eter will soon be launch­ing his own per­son­al dig­i­tal col­lectibles on Fan­Craze, the con­sumer-fac­ing brand of Fraze Tech­nolo­gies that recent­ly joined hands and became offi­cial part­ner with the Inter­na­tion­al Crick­et Coun­cil (ICC).

Mem­o­ra­bil­ia from the bats­man­’s col­lec­tion of cen­turies, ball used to pick his first IPL hat-trick for the Dec­can Charg­ers in 2009 against Mum­bai Indi­ans are some of the items that will be up for grabs as NFTs.

The Indi­an fash­ion design­er — who has dressed some of the lead­ing ladies of the Indi­an film indus­try ‑in Octo­ber launched his first fash­ion-themed NFT col­lec­tion which includ­ed five dig­i­tal designs sketched by the artist. The col­lectibles went live on the WazirX NFT mar­ket­place and accord­ing to reports, were sold with­in 12 seconds.

Mal­ho­tra sold dig­i­tal sketch­es of some of his most famous designs for $4,000 a piece, includ­ing a con­stel­la­tion of sketch­es of Kareena Kapoor Khan which was auc­tioned for around Rs 2.8 lakh.

Raghaven­dra Rathore
Raghaven­dra Rathore, who stud­ied robot­ics, mak­ing elec­tri­cal cir­cuits with sen­sors that mim­ic­ked humans, along with his team designed one of Indi­a’s first apps — iCar­bon, a smart car­bon foot­print cal­cu­la­tor that offered links to reduce an individual’s car­bon foot­print by endors­ing the plant­i­ng of trees. 

In 2021, Rathore became one of the first design­er to take his per­son­al art and con­vert it into NFTs via exclu­sive block-chain tech­nol­o­gy for art.

RAGHAVENDRA RATHORE

He launched intri­cate­ly designed art NFT inspired by the Raghaven­dra Rathore Jodh­pur brand for sale as well. This series is being launched as part of the lim­it­ed edi­tion NFT on the WazirX NFT Mar­ket­place in asso­ci­a­tion with FDCI x Lakme Fash­ion Week. 

These NFTs are being cre­at­ed to raise aware­ness for the ini­tia­tives of Raghaven­dra Rathore Foun­da­tion (RRF), a reg­is­tered non-gov­ern­men­tal orga­ni­za­tion (NGO). A por­tion of the pro­ceeds from the sale will be donat­ed to RRF to help empow­er the lives of com­mu­ni­ties through men­tor­ship pro­grams, cul­tur­al expe­ri­ences and schol­ar­ship opportunities.
