Why Did IOTA Decide to Launch Shimmer (SMR)?

Dominik Schiener:  The reasoning behind Shimmer and why do we want to have any incentivized staging network.  The future of Shimmer what is it’s value proposition, what is its future, and how does it fit within this entire ecosystem that we are building around IOTA.

Shimmer will be the official incentivized staging network of IOTA, with the native Shimmer token (SMR) and an independent ecosystem. All major upgrades of IOTA will first be available on the Shimmer network, offering builders and users a dedicated network to get early access to new innovations and opportunities. Be part of an ecosystem that dares to innovate further than any Blockchain can go.

@4:00 shimmer will be the first to be upgraded. And, this means the community will be able to innovate on the testnet first.  You can start building your applications knowing that it will be the exact same APIs and Integrations and so on with IOTA Later on. So, the users have early access. And, equally important is this validation.

IOTA wants to have the community and the adversaries in this network to really stress test each of these upgrades. So, that later on the IOTA Mainnet can be safely upgraded.

So, it is really about two things. To give the ecosystem early access to the innovations, which are coming out of IOTA like tokenization, smart contract – to eventually start building the ecosystem before the upgrade happens on the IOTA straight out of the testnet release.  The community can build their solutions, Dapps and all of that. And, also the integrations with exchanges with partners and everything will be made early through Shimmer.

The validation is very important to make sure that there is as few bugs as possible.  And, each upgrade will be done smoothly. So, this is really one of the main reasons behind doing Shimmer.

And, what is really exciting as well is that we want to upgrade our IOTA with our new consensus. And, with our complete new architecture. We want to make sure that when we do the upgrade, when we remove the coordinator, then everything can be done safely.

This is one place where Shimmer comes in to place as it is incentivized to encourage the community to participate in the network to really validate the concepts and to grow and accelerate the adoption of these technologies together with us.
