Discord Dismisses ETH Integration Amid Community Backlash
Only two days after hinting via Twitter that leading social media platform Discord may support Ethereum, company co-founder and CEO Jason Citron has clarified the platform “has no current plans” to integrate the two.
Fast facts
- Tweeting in response to the original post, Citron thanked community members for their perspectives and reiterated the firm is focusing on protecting users from spam, scams and fraud. Stopping short of ruling the move out at some point in the future, however, Citron also said “Web3 has lots of good but also lots of problems we need to work through at our scale. More soon.”
- Web 3.0 is a loosely defined term for the speculated next stage of the internet in which integration with blockchain and cryptocurrencies may begin to transform social media, commerce, games and more through increased integration and the ability to effectively transmit value digitally.
- Earlier in the week Citron posted a screenshot of Ethereum appearing to connect to Discord via wallets such as MetaMask, along with the caption “probably nothing,” hinting at possible integration. While the news was met with excitement within the crypto community, it caused quite a backlash among Discord’s community, with some members going so far as to unsubscribe from some of the platform’s premium services.
