Kamal Hassan will become the first Indian celebrity to have a digital version of himself in the metaverse. The 67-year old producer, director, actor-turned-politician announced his entry into the digital space with the launch of non-fungible tokens (NFT) collectables and plans for his museum in an upcoming metaverse game from an Indian licensed collectables platform Fantico.

“I am excited to explore the emerging intersection of the digital and physical world, which is now becoming popularly known as metaverse,” Haasan said.

“My life’s journey of over six decades will be my offering for this metaverse.”

Fantico Founder Abhayanand Singh told ET that the platform will first launch digital collectables including posters, avatars and video games for Hassan.

“Over the next few months, we are looking at the launch of the game-based metaverse, where Haasan will have his own world, his personal museum,” he said.

This will allow Hassan’s fans to interact with his digital avatars, buy memorabilia and souvenirs, physical and digital, and participate in meet and greet sessions within the game.

As market for digital collectables grows more celebrities join platforms to sell their offerings. Earlier Bollywood actors such as Amitabh Bachchan and Salman Khan and cricketers as well as leagues such as Indian Super League (ISL) have launched their own NFTs.

Singh also said Fantico is in contact with actors, sportspersons and other celebrities for similar partnerships.

NFTs, based on blockchain technology, provide unique ownership of digital assets such as videos, photographs or audio.

The NFT market has already taken off with India with several high-value deals already grabbing the headlines. Recently, Bachchan’s NFT collection ‘Madhushala’ fetched $9,66,000 or Rs 7 crore beating all records of NFT transactions in India. The collection consisted of autographed posters and poems in an auction conducted by BeyondLife.com. It was powered by Guardian Link, one of India’s biggest decentralised branded marketplaces.
